The paper was first dipped into water and powdered graphite, to make the original stained structure underneath the circus of pods, tassles, and patterns.

This project was another iteration of our dance-painting spectacle, this time done with a professional dancer. The music is the Assassin's Tango, from the movie Mr & Mrs Smith. Unfortunately, the female dancer had a last minute conflict, so this is a one-man tango. Working with local youth from Dayton, OH, we choreographed a dance where paint was poured and shot from above on the dancer below. Later we will turn the spatters and spills from this project into a finished wall and floor painting. The piece is at once a dance, a performance, a painting and an installation. I've been in Ohio for two weeks now, and have begun collaborating with the youth and with other resident artists on painting and installation. Yesterday I organized with another resident artist, a dancer/choreographer/videographer, and his group of youth participants, to create an experimental dance and painting spectacle. We spent the day at the Excelsior building in the Oregon District of Dayton, OH, and poured and shot watered down latex house paint into a 15 foot pit with dancers below. Imagine 25 or so high schoolers, gallons of paint, super-soakers, red bandanas and white workman suits, a giant empty building, and a Jay-Z soundtrack. Above is a stop motion animation made by the group of one of the other resident artists, Lisa Nonken.

Inspired by the many things you can do with a quart bag, Civilian Art Projects has invited 100 DC area artists to participate in a community art exhibition called Quart Bag. The exhibition provides an imaginative opportunity for artists to use thirty-two ounces of space within a plastic quart size bag. All works of art will be sold for $100 or less, providing an opportunity for all people to walk home with a piece of art that is FAA approved.

Load of Fun opening

Went to the Load of Fun opening in which I had two paintings last weekend. I would say it was a great success... except that the curator hung my painting sideways--the ignominy! After yelling... that is, mumbling and stuttering... at her, the situation has been resolved. Still though, a great show, with a perfect title: "Eureka! Happy Accidents and Exquisite Failures".

Images are slightly blurry... I was borrowing a camera.

I'm currently in Fiji visiting my parents, but right before I left I got into a juried show at the Touchstone gallery, Dec 12 through Jan 5. The show, the Holiday Juried Show, featured works that were 18 inches or smaller--something not exactly representative of my work, but a direction that I think I will explore.

I haven't posted in this blog for way too long, it seems its been almost 2 months! Although it hasn't been documented well by this blog, I've been very busy and life has been changing rapidly, from finishing studying Chinese in Taipei to moving back to Arlington with Adam and working as a graphic designer, and now for the past month I've been in Baltimore starting grad school. Hopefully from now on the posted works will be more mature, and I'm already starting to move away a little (but I'll never forget) illustration, and into Painting with a capital P. I'm still interested in arms, hands, and moons, but I'm getting more inspired by the natural world; leaves and animals. Here is the first painting I finished at MICA (started in DC), the entire painting plus two details. (I started the piece in the beginning of the summer... details of it were posted earlier) Future paintings will be less design/illustration inspired (although that element will hopefully never fully disappear!)
